Day Three of the 2011 Christmas Extravaganza: Either Mom is classing it up this year or she was just afraid of ending up on my Tumblr wearing her Milk Bone pajamas and/or her Virginia Slims robe.

Liz and I babysat my nieces, Caroline and Cate, for the first time ever tonight. Caroline wasn’t really into learning poker, nor watching Pitbulls and Parolees, but Old Maid got us through the night. And Cate didn’t need a single diaper-change, so I consider the evening an overwhelming success.

I forget that an invitation from my sister to come over for dinner actually means spending half the night in a pink tent playing “School” and/or “Mommy & Daddy,” which entails putting my Disney-character children to bed over and over again.

After waiting for hours, Caroline finally gets to talk to her mother, who just gave birth to Caroline’s little sister, Cate.

At first she asked, “Can I pet her?” And then she wanted everyone to leave Laura and Cate’s room to go back downstairs to play Go Fish some more with her. When no one exactly jumped up to go downstairs, I think she realized that the game had officially been changed, and her crown is now potentially at risk.

What my camera lacks in photo quality, it makes up for with underwater capabilities. When Caroline was swimming from her dad to me, I had no idea her eyes were open until I looked at my pictures later. My God, kids are creepy.

If I had the option of putting my kid in the classroom of someone who’s been teaching for 15 years or putting them in my brother-in-law’s classroom, I would easily choose to put them in his. It may have taken him a while to finish college, which he did today, but that dude has the right attitude, as well as the right priorities. Proud of him for sticking through a decade and a half or so of college. That’s a lot of new editions of textbooks.
